nope... the only thing that gives the homeless any impetus to actually utilize city services... is to not be able to panhandle... or to not get anything from pedestrians... unfortunately well meaning, but ill advised folks still give out money... which leads the panhandlers to the liquor store or the local "pharmacy"

Thanks for the update. I really hope that Wells will get community input on something that could have a huge impact on our neighborhood and our property values. I sent him an email expressing my thoughts.

Just to let you know how things are going, today was another grand walking experience. The small park located on Penn. Ave. and 4th Street had a huge group of homeless hanging out there today. This group included one woman cursing and punching another man and another man dumping all of his trash on the ground. My husband and I asked the man to clean up his trash. This didn't go over well and we got some delightful comments.

For the amount of money we are paying for our homes and in property taxes, I am amazed that it seems that only a small few think this is a problem.

Kris:
If information filtering through on the various list serv's is correct, then you have seen nothing yet. Apparently the city with the support and approval of Ward 6 Councilman Tommy Wells has agreed to open homeless shelters in the eastern part of the Ward 6 community in the vicinity of DC General for an estimated 400 individuals. Wells proposes providing transportation for the homeless into and out of the community to other parts of the Ward and city. Its a shame he didn't think it necessary to ask anyone's opinion about his grand plan and its impact on the surrounding community.

Is there any way we can try and get some sort of campaign organized that encourages people to give to organizations helping the homeless or programs such as Street Sense, rather than just handing over money to an individual panhandler.

Over the past few weeks, the Hill seems to be attracting more and more homeless pandhandlers. That is fine except for what I had to see with my family and friends who were visiting me from out of state. After declaring my love for the Hill, they had to witness the incoherent man near 8th street with his pants wide open and a good amount of his privates in full view. This was a little while after they saw the homeless guy at Garfield Park drinking from a bag and then throwing up right in front of himself. Then there were a few others who reeked of urine and decided to dump their food containers on the ground right in front of us. Nothing like reinforcing the reputation that the Hill is not a good area for kids. Again, I am not anti homeless, but I pretty much had it when my family and friends, however, had to walk by the man with his pants open.
