| Tuition assistance bill wins final House OK |
VOICE writes, "The U.S. House of Representatives yesterday passed the final version of D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton’s legislation to help fund public-university tuition for District students for the next five years.
The funds will continue a program known as the D.C. Tuition Assistance Grant Program, which allows high school students in D.C. to attend universities in other states and reap the in-state tuition offered on those campuses. Because D.C. has few opportunities for students to attend state universities at more affordable prices, the bill makes it possible for D.C. high school graduates to attend other states’ universities at a discount. "

The bill allocates up to $10,000 annually for D.C. students to get in-state tuition at most public colleges or up to $2,500 annually to attend private schools in the city and Washington region. In the 2005-06 school year, almost 5,000 students received funding to various universities around the country, according to a news release from Norton’s office.
“The tuition program also has been a magnet for families to stay or move within the city’s boundaries, with the District’s economy receiving benefits,” Norton’s office said.
The legislation exempts families with yearly taxable income of more than $1 million, a change this year that Norton opposed.
The measure has yet to be signed by President George W. Bush, but Norton’s office said it expects his support.
