VOICE writes, "Beloved Ninth Street SE resident dies at 79
By Celeste McCall
Capitol Hill resident Angela Simmons, a regular at the annual 9th Street block parties for many years and supporter of numerous local charities and art shows, died of lung cancer Friday at the Washington Hospice Center. She was 79.
Simmons was born in the Calabrian region of Italy and came to the United States in 1960. She lived in New York City while doing postgraduate studies in genetics at Columbia University. "

She moved to Washington in 1965 and married D.C. architect Tom Simmons. He designed their contemporary home on 9th Street SE, where she enjoyed tending to her garden -- which friends admired. Her husband died in 1986.
Simmons loved to travel, especially in Asia and South America. She traveled to the Galapagos Islands, Machu Picchu, Kashmir and Burma and other exotic destinations. She also maintained a home in Naples, Italy.
Also an avid reader, Simmons’ book collection included more than 10,000 volumes.
She is survived by her son Marco, 44, who lives across the street from the family home. “She was a great lady,” he said.
