Kentucky Avenue gem abundant in natural light
writes, "Kentucky Avenue gem abundant in natural light

BY LINDA NORTON

On Capitol Hill there are particular blocks on certain streets that are extraordinary — the one hundred block of Kentucky Avenue, SE, has long been known as one of those blocks.

The street is wide and still has a number of its large elm trees shading the sidewalks as well as abundant flowers three seasons of the year. One end of the block abuts Lincoln Park and the other, Independence Avenue.

There are a number of longtime neighbors and the block parties are not to be missed. For these and other reasons this block has long been recognized as one of the best blocks in the Capitol Hill neighborhood.
"
The home at 128 Kentucky Ave. is a good example of the long-term nature of life on the block.

The front doorway is distinguished by a carved brownstone cornice and double door entry. Built in 1914, the floor plan of the house remains largely unchanged. The present owner, who purchased the house in the 1970s, has lovingly maintained the original chestnut woodwork throughout the house.

The living room and dining room have fireplaces with original chimney breasts.

Pocket doors can divide the living room and dining room areas on either side of the cross-house stairway hall. In addition to the bay front windows in the living room, there is the unusual feature of an original bay window in the dining room.

Needless to say, three windows are better than one and the bay adds not only floor space but significantly more light than the usual single dining room window.

The kitchen is a terrific one with double height cherry cabinetry, stainless appliances and granite countertops. The efficient design means that there really is a great deal of storage and counter space for even the most serious of chefs.

From the kitchen, stairs lead to the backyard. Even though the yard is not what anyone would call large, it is large enough for a great shade tree, planting beds and a soothing fountain. It’s just the kind of secret garden that a few friends can enjoy at the end of a long day of work.

Upstairs, the front room is presently used as a library with lots of bookcases and comfortable furniture in front of the fireplace. The current owner uses the middle bedroom as the master bedroom. The back bedroom has an unusual “bayed” back wall that allows for three windows instead of the usual two.

The basement is partially finished and contains the laundry room and a significant amount of storage space.

The house is not air-conditioned, which can be tough during a hot spell, but I toured the house on a very hot day and the window units were keeping the interior comfortably cool.

The asking price for 128 Kentucky Ave., SE, is $879,000. For more information or to tour the house, contact Dee Dee Branand of Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage at (202) 369-7902 or e-mail http://dbranand@cbmove.com.
