The Southeast Capitol Hill advisory neighborhood commission (ANC 6B) is desperate for your help. Literally.

According to chairwoman Julie Olson, the commission is attempting a marketing campaign to let folks know they are there, as they have been since 1976.

“People need to be aware of what we’re doing,” Olson said. “The problem is getting people who don’t know what an ANC is to be more active.”

The D.C. Council and Mayor Adrian Fenty are asking residents and commuters to take a train, bus, bike or walk to work next Tuesday, the first annual DC Car Free Day.

Earlier this summer, Ward 6 Councilman Tommy Wells proposed the event to council members, who unanimously supported the resolution. On Sept. 18, the District will join a handful of other U.S. cities with designated car-free days.

There are three open advisory neighborhood commission seats available in Ward 6 – two on the Southeast Capitol Hill body and one with the Near Northeast panel.

The influx of vacant seats is due to Commissioners Antonette Russell, Terry Heubert and Daniel Ostergaard moving out of their single-member districts.
