D.C. Teacher makes mark with global education strategies
writes, "BY HANNAH REXROTH

Commitment to global education has set D.C. teacher Reynauld Smith apart in the academic world.
Smith, a social studies and advanced placement American History teacher at Eastern High School, was one of three educators chosen to receive the 2007 Harold W. McGraw Jr. Prize in Education. The award honors teachers whose dedication and accomplishments have had an extraordinary impact within the American education system.
“Someone once observed that what we in the U.S. call global education the rest of the world simply calls … education,” said Harold McGraw III at the awards dinner on Sept. 25 at the New York Public Library. McGraw is the CEO of McGraw-Hill, which provides educational tools to teachers, professionals and students. “The three educational pioneers whom we honor tonight have moved us beyond this situation.”

writes, "New fast-food regs target permitting process

The District recently adopted new regulations for fast-food establishments — the catalyst for change sprang from clashes over businesses on H Street, NE.

The Zoning Commission finalized the rules in July and they officially took effect Sept. 28. The goal was to more narrowly define fast-food establishments in order to simplify the permitting process. The Northeast Capitol Hill advisory neighborhood commission (ANC 6A) said the old regulations were too murky to effectively control such establishments.

"H Street was a vibrant commercial corridor and the go-to place in D.C. until it was scarred by the riots in '68," said business developer Thomas Gallo, who provides assistance to businesses along the corridor. "There's still a lot there, it just needs to be discovered."

The Near Northeast advisory neighborhood commission Sept. 25 supported a major mixed-use development at 200 H St., NE.

At its Sept. 11 meeting, the commission voted to delay the vote until this week's special meeting. Architects Rick Cook and Mark Fox had presented current project designs and building plans, which have changed drastically since developers first presented the project to the commission last year. The team had been in negotiations with city-designated mediator Lee Quill and community members over the size and scope of the proposed building.

Store owners mull 'gap' in retailing future on Barracks
writes, "Retail stores cause ‘Gap’ on Barracks Row

BY BEN WEINSTEIN

Capitol Hill residents had mixed responses to recent news about The Gap or another large clothing retailer possibly opening on Barracks Row — while some say they want those shopping options within walking distance, others worry big chains could eventually erode the neighborhood's character.

The Washington Business Journal reported this month that an investment firm sales representative was courting The Gap and J. Crew for Eighth Street, SE. Area advisory neighborhood commissioner Julie Olson responded with a letter criticizing the idea, specifically taking issue with replacing Alvear Studio & Design Imports with a chain retailer.
