ANC 6C pushes for traffic study
writes, "ANC 6C pushes for traffic study

BY BEN WEINSTEIN

The Near Northeast advisory neighborhood commission (ANC 6C) Oct. 10 voted to support discussions between the District Department of Transportation and the Coalition of Concerned Citizens of Eastern Washington,

The coalition wants a comprehensive assessment made by an independent organization on the impact of development around the Anacostia and Southwest waterfront projects. "We support thoughtful transportation improvement just as we support thoughtful development," said coalition member Tom Grahame.

Grahame said a recent traffic study conducted by the city doesn’t adequately consider the massive amount of area development in the pipeline, and that the group's worried about significantly larger traffic problems. He added that planned transportation projects, such as the 11th Street Bridge and Kenilworth Avenue Interchange, will have a major impact on surrounding residential streets.
"
Kathleen Penney, transportation department deputy chief engineer, said the 11th Street Bridge project addresses the expected traffic increase from commuters entering and leaving the District over the river. She also said the department has conducted major studies on area traffic but that there's too much data to consider traffic on a neighborhood and single-street level.

NW 1 meeting Oct. 23

Naomi Mitchell, constituent liaison for Ward 6 Councilman Tommy Wells, announced an Oct. 23 meeting on the proposed Northwest One housing development project.

Developers will open their proposals to community comment. The Meeting will be from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Holy Redeemer Church, 210 New York Ave., NW.

Also, the commission's committee on alcohol licenses reported that it will hold the last community meeting next month to gather input on a possible single-sales moratorium for its portion of the H Street corridor.

Of the five liquor stores that could be affected by a ban, only one sent a representative to address the committee, a report states. That store owner, from H Street Liquor, told the committee that single sales were a big part of his business but that if all other area stores were under the ban, he might support it.

Other action

The commission also voted to:

• Adopt election procedures for the recently vacated seat by Terry Heubert. At its November meeting, the commission will hold an election open to residents of its sixth single-member district — from Fifth to Eighth streets and Massachusetts Avenue to F and G streets.

• Support liquor-license renewals for: Additi Indian Kitchen, B Smith's, Mama Ilardo Pizzeria, America and Frank & Stein, all in Union Station; Footnotes Cafe, 418 Seventh St., NW; Teaism, 400 Eighth St., NW; Inde Bleu; 707 G St., NW; D'Aqua Restaurant, 801 Pennsylvania Ave., NW; Johnny's Half Shell, 400 North Capitol St., NW; and Bistro Italia, 320 D St., NE.

• Protest a new license application for The Source by Wolfgang Puck, 575 Pennsylvania Ave., NW. But commissioners opposed the request only because the applicant cannot go before the panel before its next monthly meeting, and the vote stipulates that the protest will be withdrawn with a signed voluntary agreement.

• Empower Commissioner Ryan Velasco to represent the commission's concerns about water mains and fire hydrants to the Water and Sewer Authority. The issue arose from reports of inadequate water pressure in a recent Adams Morgan fire.

Roll call

Commissioners Keith Silver, Ryan Velasco, Mark Dixon, Karen Wirt, Charles Docter, Anne Phelps and Lena Brown were present. Commissioner Alan Kimber was absent.

The commission's next meeting will begin at 7 p.m. on Nov. 14 at the Heritage Foundation, 214 Massachusetts Ave., NE.
