| River clean-up bill sent to president |
VOICE writes, "D.C. Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton’s Anacostia Clean-up bill has reached President Bush’s desk. The bill addresses the river’s pollution and includes a long-term restoration and protection plan, provided for in the Anacostia Watershed Initiative."
The local community and government will work alongside the Army Corps of Engineers to produce the necessary funding, which will be in the hundred millions. Norton’s bill authorizes $55 million in federal dollars.
The delegate also called upon the federal government for financial assistance, saying that it is responsible for pollution resulting from an old sewage system, which is the biggest contributor to the river’s contamination.
