| Senators send two teams to softball World Series |
VOICE writes, "Senators send two teams to softball World Series
BY LARRY KAUFER
The Capitol Hill-based U-18 Senators softball team finished second at the USSSA Elite World Series in Orlando, Fla. earlier this month.
It was the fourth straight year to the team was invited to the tournament. In the previous appearances they finished in the top four. On the road to second place, the team ran off consecutive victories over teams from Michigan, Indiana, and a most impressive 1-0 upset victory over tournament favorite Florida, but lost the title game to California.
Coach Stan Kolbe noted that the Florida shutout was the best game of the year for the team. Pitcher Alie Kolbe held the opponent to two hits and no runs, which is notable since Florida had won previous games by multiple runs. The Senators’ run came off a double by Jordan Reid, a bunt by Carly Martin and a passed ball error.
Notable contributions in the games were the pitching of Alie Kolbe who didn’t allow an earned run all week against top national competition. Important hitting came from catcher Vicki Webb and infielder Brittany Polan, each who had three home runs and clutch hits to generate runs when most needed. "

The team is invited to compete in the ASA Eastern National Championship Aug. 1-5 to close out the summer season at York, Pa.
Not to be outdone, the “junior” Senators team has been invited for the first time to the USSSA tournament at the Disney complex in Orlando for U-14 teams later this month.
This is not an accident as coach Kolbe commented that they had trained very hard during the off-season and came out strong and successful in spring tournament action. The team has done very well considering many of the girls are 13 and play against teams of mostly 14-year-old players.
As usual, many teammates have been Senators players for several years and also have additional experience playing for their D.C. area school teams.
Both teams are based at and practice at Tyler Field on 11th Street. After finishing their summer schedule and August break, they will resume practice and more tournament play this fall to prepare for next year’s challenges.

Girls only soccer forming
Sports on the Hill is reorganizing its soccer division to attract more girls to the game and allow for more growth.
When Soccer on the Hill began a few decades ago, the small number of interested kids, both boys and girls, constrained the league options to offer only co-ed teams in order to have enough players and teams for a meaningful house league.
While the co-ed teams were attractive for some girls, only a small proportion of the total players were girls.
However, beginning this fall Soccer on the Hill will offer girls only teams in the U-8 and U-10 divisions. Girls can select to play on girls only teams or they can select to play on a coed team.
Registration and information on all Sports on the Hill youth sports is offered on the Web site www.sportsonthehill.com. For more information questions, call Larry Kaufer at (202) 543 4582.

Senators make WaPo team
Seems like yesterday when Alie Kolbe, Vicki Webb, and Olivia Sealander started 5 year olds T-ball with the Capitol Hill Children’s Baseball League summer program.
Now as high school fast-pitch softball standouts, it is clear they have come a long way in an already impressive career of girls’softball competition. All have been standouts with the Washington Senators program before and during their days at the National Cathedral School for which their play was honored recently: all were featured as first team members of the Spring 2007 All District Washington Post team.
Alie Kolbe played pitcher and hit .578 for Cathedral, while leading the league in strikeouts. She pitched nine games allowing one run or less and compiled an earned run average of .513. When pitching she generated 66 percent or team outs via strikeouts.
Olivia Sealander played outfield and hit .585 with four home runs and led the Cathedral Eagles with 20 runs batted in. She co-captained the team to a 10-2 season record with only a 2-1 loss separating the team from a title tie.
