Senators nab top 10 finish at ASA Nationals
writes, "BY LARRY KAUFER

Coming off a second-place finish at the USSSA Elite World Series, the Hill-based Washington Senators set off for the ASA National tournament in York, Penn.

“Our girls wanted to try the ASA Nationals and compete against some of the best A-level teams,” coach Stan Kolbe said.

The Senators quickly nabs victories against teams from New York (Long Island) and Pennsylvania. During an elimination game against a separate Pennsylvania squad, the Senators claimed victory in extra innings off a key infield hit by Carly Martin followed by Vicki Webb's single to push in the winning run.

"
The Hill team squared off against rival Bayside Blues of Maryland in a late evening game. The Senators had beaten the Blues twice this summer in major tournaments. Kathy Mclauglin and Jordan Reid had the big extra base hits to bring in four of the Senators’ six runs.

One game from the final four and on the last day of competition, the Senators faced the best team in the tournament from upstate New York. They had tied this team in 10 innings in PONY tournament play before, so a tight game was expected.

A bizarre umpire's call with two outs in the third inning opened the door for an error and two New York runs to score. The Senators battled back to score one and load the bases in the fifth inning before a second umpire’s call on a pick-off at first base ended the rally with the Senators top hitter, Brittany Polan, at the plate. The Senators lost 2-1.

Kolbe said: “Both calls were the big plays of the game and everyone thought the umpire made them incorrectly, including the New York coach who told us later we should have won that game 1-0 rather than losing 2-1”.

The team suffered a second lost against a New Hampshire/Massachusetts team, placing them in ninth place for the tournament.

Next year will be the final year for the senior Senators. Having finished near the top of three major tournaments in the past two years, the team will be focusing on their final run at bringing a girls fast-pitch softball national championship to Washington.
