| Senators send two teams to softball World Series |
VOICE writes, "Senators send two teams to softball World Series
BY LARRY KAUFER
The Capitol Hill-based U-18 Senators softball team finished second at the USSSA Elite World Series in Orlando, Fla. earlier this month.
It was the fourth straight year to the team was invited to the tournament. In the previous appearances they finished in the top four. On the road to second place, the team ran off consecutive victories over teams from Michigan, Indiana, and a most impressive 1-0 upset victory over tournament favorite Florida, but lost the title game to California.
Coach Stan Kolbe noted that the Florida shutout was the best game of the year for the team. Pitcher Alie Kolbe held the opponent to two hits and no runs, which is notable since Florida had won previous games by multiple runs. The Senators’ run came off a double by Jordan Reid, a bunt by Carly Martin and a passed ball error.
Notable contributions in the games were the pitching of Alie Kolbe who didn’t allow an earned run all week against top national competition. Important hitting came from catcher Vicki Webb and infielder Brittany Polan, each who had three home runs and clutch hits to generate runs when most needed. "
