Triathlons, beer and moonbounces
writes, "Triathlons, beer and moonbounces

By Celeste McCall

CHAMPS President Martha Huizenga finished at the top of her age group at the American Memorial Triathlon in Greenwood Lake, N.Y., on Sept. 16.

Huizenga finished with an impressive 1:49:20 time, enough to finish in 36th place out of 123 participants. It was her third triathlon this year — she competed in a super-sprint contest in Manassas on Aug. 12 and a practice race with the DC Tri Club on Aug. 18.

The Greenwood race consisted of a half-mile swim, 16-mile bike ride capping off with a 4-mile run.

“It feels good to pick up a new ‘sport’ at 40,” Huizenga tells us.

Space oddities

A native of San Diego, Glick’s space oddities will be on display beginning in October. The museum is commemorating the 50th anniversary of the launching of Sputnik.
"
“[The museum] has always been a favorite place of mine and I am honored that they will be displaying my Soviet Space collection,” Glick tells us.

Glick, a member of the Southeast Capitol Hill advisory neighborhood commission, said he began his collection when he lived in Russia.

Among the 150 items on display are: items that highlight Laika the dog, the first space traveler; Yuri Gagarin, the first man in space; Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space; and Apollo Soyuz. There are also original newspapers, schematics and autographs of the Russian Right Stuff team on exhibit.

Glick’s space gadgets can be viewed at www.aerospacemuseum.org.

Beer here

Belga Café is now importing its very own beer from Belgium.

In addition to its already extensive list of more than 80 beers, the restaurant now offers Belga Pils (a pilsner) and Belga White (an ale). The brews are priced at about $5 each.

Belga Beer Week – when beers were paired with a special menu –runs Sept. 24-30. For the $43 prix fixe menu, diners may choose from such appetizers as cod tartar, crawfish, chilled watermelon/tomato soup with calamari. Entrees encompass pan-seared rockfish fillet, free range chicken breast, pork cheeks with figs. Selected desserts are tarte Tatin or a blackberry mint milkshake.

On Oct. 3, Belga’s executive chef/owner Bart M. Vandaele will present an equally impressive menu at the prestigious James Beard House in Manhattan. The repast begins with smoked Hudson Valley foie gras and continues with stuffed macaroni, halibut poached in ale, herb crusted venison, crème brulee.

Open daily, Belga Café is located at 514 Eighth Street SE. Call (202) 544-0100.

Coming soon

SOVA, an espresso and wine bar at 1359 H St., NE, will be arriving soon.

The first culinary endeavor for Lincoln Park resident Frank E. Hankins, SOVA should debut later this fall. Design for the 2,100-square-foot space is a joint effort of Alvear Studio and Homebody, a pair of chic, Barracks Row Second Saturday mainstays.

Along with coffee, SOVA will dispense croissants, bagels and other breakfast pastries, provided by Hawthorne Bakery in Maryland. Desserts will come from Patisserie Poupon of Georgetown.

Stay tuned.

Busing it

Ward 6 Councilman Tommy Wells took a break Sept. 10 from his usual bicycle commute to join mayor Adrian Fenty on public transportation.

The occasion was Fenty’s well-publicized bus ride promoting Washington’s First Car Free Day, which took place Sept. 18. Wells, whose 2006 campaign slogan was “A Liveable and a Walkable Community,” usually rides his steel-gray Bianchi bike to his Wilson Building office. This time, however, Wells accompanied Fenty on the No. 52 Metrobus heading north on 14th Street, NW.

Wells explained that since more people are moving into the District, it is essential to avoid traffic gridlock. “You don’t need a car to get around,” he told The Washington Post. “That’s what makes us different from the suburbs.”

Kids day

Freemasons Naval Lodge #4 is gearing up for its second annual Back to School Fun Fair, a charity event benefiting students of Capitol Hill Cluster Schools.

Scheduled from afterschool until sundown on Sept. 28, the fair will be held at Watkins Elementary School, 420 12th St., SE.

There will be a moonbounce, carnival games and plenty of hot dogs. The event is free, but donations are requested at the door. (Cluster schools are Watkins, Peabody and Stuart-Hobson.)

“It’s an event which brings kids and their families together,” said Junior Warden David Johnson, who lives near Lincoln Park. “Improving public schools is the key to the continued growth of our community.”
