| Three Kings visit the Hill |
VOICE writes, "By Celeste McCall
“It’s great that people are paying me to do what I would do for free,” renowned writer Stephen King said in front of 500 eager fans at Reformation Lutheran Church last Friday.
The novelist, his wife and fellow author Tabitha King, and their 31-year-old son, Owen, all read from their works at the church. The sold-out crowd paid $30 each to jam into the church at 201 East Capitol St. SE.
The event -- the first time the three Kings have appeared together -- was the final reading of the annual PEN/Faulkner Writers in Schools program. The co-sponsors were the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress and the Folger Shakespeare Library. Earlier that day at the Library of Congress’ Coolidge Auditorium, the King trio discussed their works with 150 high school students from Cardozo High School, IDEA Public Charter School and McKinley Technology High School.
After an introduction from novelist and PEN/Faulkner Foundation board member Mary Kay Zuraleff, Tabitha King read from a work in progress, “Potter’s Rif,” a story involving 19th-century porcelain. Then Owen read a short story called “Nothing in Bad Taste.” "

| The restaurant scene on and near Capitol Hill is hopping. |
VOICE writes, "By Celeste McCall - Barracks Row’s Cafe 8 Mediterranean Eatery is set to open later this month at 424 8th St. SE, site of the recently departed Ellington’s on Eighth. Among the mirrored and rose-hued stucco walls and refurbished patio, Turkish-born proprietor Turan Tombal plans to serve Mediterranean dishes “with Turkish flair.” Since the departure of Mehane (now Locanda), we’ve missed that vibrant cuisine on the Hill. For Cafe 8 updates, call 202-547-1555. "

By Celeste McCall CHAMPS President Martha Huizenga finished at the top of her age group at the American Memorial Triathlon in Greenwood Lake, N.Y., on Sept. 16.
Huizenga finished with an impressive 1:49:20 time, enough to finish in 36th place out of 123 participants. It was her third triathlon this year — she competed in a super-sprint contest in Manassas on Aug. 12 and a practice race with the DC Tri Club on Aug. 18.
The Greenwood race consisted of a half-mile swim, 16-mile bike ride capping off with a 4-mile run.
“It feels good to pick up a new ‘sport’ at 40,” Huizenga tells us.
Space oddities
A native of San Diego, Glick’s space oddities will be on display beginning in October. The museum is commemorating the 50th anniversary of the launching of Sputnik. "

VOICE writes, "Anniversaries, makeovers and temporary digs
By Celeste McCall Groovy dc, the chic-funky card and gift shop at 428 Eighth St., SE, turns a year old this month. For its anniversary festivities, Dennis Dewees and Manuel Cortes’ recently renovated shop in time for an open house during CHAMPS’s Second Saturday on Sept. 8, made complete with refreshments and specially priced merchandise. Also turning one is the National Garden at the U.S. Botanic Garden, west of the U.S. Capitol. Although the actual anniversary is not until Sept. 29, the gardens celebrated Sept. 8 with Family Day festivities — which included kids activities, cooking, ikebana and gardening demos and tours. Authorized by Congress, the National Garden is a public-private venture built with funds raised by citizens, corporations and garden clubs, featuring plants native to the mid-Atlantic region. Nearby is the rose garden, first ladies water garden and a delightful butterfly space.
Located at 100 Maryland Ave. SW, the National Garden is open daily from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. through Sept. 30. The U.S. Botanic Garden is open year around. For more information call (202) 225-8333. "
