writes, "BY MICHAEL SKINNER
-

“The mayor is coming!” students on the playground exclaimed. “He came to my house, and now he’s at my school,” gushed one first-grader.

Mayor Adrian Fenty visited Two Rivers Public Charter School one bright fall afternoon in early October. School Executive Director Jessica Wodatch and Principal Jim May escorted Fenty and his staff on a tour of Two Rivers’ new Florida Avenue campus.

Fenty had an opportunity to see classes hard at work, quietly observing lessons in action in some classrooms and talking directly to students and teachers in others.

Literary dreams new library
writes, "BY Amy Weedon

In his first year at Maury Elementary School, a prospective parent asked Principal Michael Wilson what he thought of the No Child Left Behind Act. He replied that, in his opinion, children should be able to read by first-grade, not the standard of third-grade.

Three years later, this remains a top priority for Wilson. And thanks to the Capitol Hill Community Foundation's School Libraries Project, a grant from the Northeast Capitol Hill advisory neighborhood commission (ANC 6A), and an enormous amount of “sweat equity” from volunteers, Wilson has a brand new library, helping Maury students meet his high standards.

The outdoor classroom is intended to promote healthy development — physical, emotional and spiritual ‑ through nature.

History doesn’t have to be dusty, dull or distant. At least not the way it’s done at Stuart-Hobson Middle School, where students, archivists and teachers are digging deep into the school’s more than 80-year history.

“I think that working on this helps students realize how rich their school and neighborhood history is,” says Satu Haase-Webb, a school archivists working on a project called “Filling in the Missing Pieces – Stuart-Hobson History Collection.”

Beauty Day at Maury
writes, "Beauty Day at Maury

BY HEATHER SCHOELL

Parents, students and volunteers began rolling in for D.C. Public School’s annual Beautification Day at 8 a.m., all ready to dig in. Landscaping was the main focus, where volunteers were busy weeding and planting with temperatures hitting 97 degrees in the shade.

After Principal Michael Wilson gave Chancellor Michelle Rhee a tour of Maury’s new library, she planted flowers and chatted amicably with volunteers.

Many Maury families pitched in: the Fontenots and Estradas worked tirelessly, Heather and Nicky labored away, Sonia and Alistair with 5-year-old Robert (a stellar sweeper), and Noel and Nhu-an – even 3-year-old Isabelle – toiled over yard work all morning long. Dan Mullins and Matt Haines did far more than their share of heavy lifting.
