Stuart-Hobson students help make history
writes, "By Gabriella Boston

History doesn’t have to be dusty, dull or distant. At least not the way it’s done at Stuart-Hobson Middle School, where students, archivists and teachers are digging deep into the school’s more than 80-year history.

“I think that working on this helps students realize how rich their school and neighborhood history is,” says Satu Haase-Webb, a school archivists working on a project called “Filling in the Missing Pieces – Stuart-Hobson History Collection.”
"
They’re discovering and archiving old pictures, disciplinary records (a girl in the 1950s was sent to the principal’s office for smoking a cigarette in the classroom!) and documentation about residency (all in the immediate neighborhood), as well as socioeconomic status (mostly lower middleclass.)

While students and administrators are excited about the level of documentation found, they want more, much more. And this is where residents come in.

So, if you happened to attend the school anytime between the 1920s and 1980s, please help “fill in the missing pieces.”

“We’re looking for good oral history. People who were there and remember something interesting about the school whether it was during the war or during integration,” Haase-Webb says.

The school was always co-ed, she says, but it wasn’t integrated until 1954, when it was called Stuart Junior High.

So, if you’re a graduate of Stuart-Hobson and would like to help fill in missing pieces of history, please contact the school at (202) 698-4700 or one of the following: Satu Haase-Webb, satuhw@yahoo.com, Beth Behrendt at eabehrendt@hotmail.com or Jan MacKinnon at janmb2@yahoo.com.
