Beauty Day at Maury
writes, "Beauty Day at Maury

BY HEATHER SCHOELL

Parents, students and volunteers began rolling in for D.C. Public School’s annual Beautification Day at 8 a.m., all ready to dig in. Landscaping was the main focus, where volunteers were busy weeding and planting with temperatures hitting 97 degrees in the shade.

After Principal Michael Wilson gave Chancellor Michelle Rhee a tour of Maury’s new library, she planted flowers and chatted amicably with volunteers.

Many Maury families pitched in: the Fontenots and Estradas worked tirelessly, Heather and Nicky labored away, Sonia and Alistair with 5-year-old Robert (a stellar sweeper), and Noel and Nhu-an – even 3-year-old Isabelle – toiled over yard work all morning long. Dan Mullins and Matt Haines did far more than their share of heavy lifting.
"
By noon we had run out of things to do. The place was clean, tidy and free of weeds and litter. Alistair had even sanded and revarnished the handcrafted Maury sign on the corner. Members from Metropolitan Police Department provided water and Wilson provided the cookout and, more importantly, according to the kids, the gigantic moonbounce.

Back to school night

Back to School Night on Sept. 6 brought in a full house of parents, teachers and Maury partners.

Principal Michael Wilson reminded parents of their responsibility to usher students into the building on time and in proper uniform attire. Breakfast begins no earlier than 8:15 a.m. and class starts promptly at 8:45 a.m.

Sara Lesk of the National Gallery of Art announced that gallery would be back for another wonderful opportunity for Maury students to explore fine art through its Art Around the Corner program, culminating in the exhibition The Artist Within at Maury later in the year. Quynn Johnson of Joy of Motion was on hand to speak of their partnership with Maury and how it will continue this year with a final dance performance.

Coy Nesbett of Urban Family Development spoke of their tutoring program (coming soon to Maury’s aftercare) and Alphonso Coles of Watch DOG challenged fathers to take an active role in their child’s education. George Blackmon of the Maury PTSA stirred the crowd, outlined plans for fundraising and reminded parents and students to join the group. Rich Carlson of Ameriprise Financial, Inc. announced a free seminar for the community on financially planning for college (7 p.m. on Oct. 18 in Maury’s multi-purpose room.)
