New pastor welcomed
writes, "New pastor welcomed

BY DIANE DEWHIRST

St. Peter’s Interparish School began the new school year welcoming Rev. William Byrne, who was installed at the new pastor at St. Peter’s Church on Capitol Hill in late August.

Byrne most recently served as Chaplain at the University of Maryland in College Park. After the annual blessing of the school with Rev. Bill Hegedusich, known as “Father Bill” to the students, Byrne told parents that one of the reasons he was excited about his ministry on Capitol Hill was the presence of St. Peter’s School.

'Got Magic?'

No, your eyes did not deceive you: there were dozens of boys and girls playing Muggle Quidditch on Capitol Hill this fall.

The Harry Potter themed games and other activities — including a make your own Wand Shop, The Leaky Cauldron with refreshments and treats and the much anticipated dunking tank for eighth-graders — were part of St. Peter’s summer reading celebration.

In an effort to inspire more reading, last June students (grades second through eighth) signed a pledge to read and prepare reports on a required number of books during the summer vacation. If assignments were completed successfully, students were invited to attend a “Got Magic?” celebration that included a Muggle tournament and other activities.

The brainchild of school librarian Barbara Ochmanek and reading resource teacher Alice Hale, this annual event is always much appreciated by the students each fall.
