| D.C. tuition bill clears Congress |
VOICE writes, "The D.C. Tuition Assistance Grant Program was extended for five years when the Senate passed Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton’s D.C. College Access Act (H.R. 1124) on Sept. 18. President Bush is expected to sign the bill, which was slated to expire at the end of the month."
The program grants up to $10,000 to D.C. students annually to cover the higher out-of-state tuitions at state universities, or up to $2,500 for institutions within the region. A 60 percent increase in college attendance was seen over five years following the founding of the program, a Norton news release stated.
During the 2005-06 school year, nearly 5,000 students received aid enabling them to attend universities throughout the United States, the District and the U.S. Virgin Islands.
