EDITORIAL: Save you
writes, "Save you

The D.C. Department of Fire and Emergency Services’ Smoke Alarm Verification and Utilization program allows every District resident to have a smoke detector installed in their home on the city’s dime. A firefighter will come to your home and set up the device to insure its proper usage.
"
This Saturday, firefighters will be knocking on doors in the immediate Eastern market area to check some 642 residences for smoke detectors. We hope everyone who lives in the area will welcome the firefighters and ask what more they can do to better plan should a fire strike.

The District government has a terrible reputation for red tape - as do many other governments across the world. But this program shows that the city is beginning to get some things right. After all, city statistics show that about half of all fires and three-fifths of all fire deaths occur in homes without smoke detectors.

We encourage everyone who lives on Capitol Hill to call the fire department to get a free detector installed. Help our firefighters to save you.
