Eastern Market doubles for European flower mart during movie shoot

BY CELESTE MCCALL

September started off with a bang on Capitol Hill.

Eastern Market welcomed Tinseltown as moviemakers descended on the historic structure Sept. 5 to shoot a pivotal scene in “Body of Lies.”

Director Ridley Scott, his crew and dozens of local extras, were filming a car bombing in the political thriller that stars Russell Crowe and Leonardo DiCaprio.

Cameras were stationed in three locations along Seventh Street, with one planted on the roof of Port City Java.
"
As bystanders — including Mayor Adrian Fenty and city administrator Dan Tangherlini — gawked cameras rolled before the red-brick facade (far below the scaffolding), which was decked out to resemble an Amsterdam flower market.

Bicycles, mopeds and automobiles all bore European license plates. One VW had a Kerry/Edwards bumper sticker, but the vehicle was eventually removed from the set.

For the big scene, produce and flowers were displayed with signs in Dutch and prices listed in Euros. Extras, clad in heavy winter costumes, sweltered in the 90-degree heat through endless rehearsals before the actual explosion.

Finally, as a helicopter hovered overhead, a spectacular fireball incinerated a car as spectators — kept at a safe distance by production and security personal — covered their ears. Although the pyrotechnics were carefully controlled, the D.C. Fire Department was taking no chances, as trucks and firefighters in full gear stood by in case of a mishap.

In fact, engines from local stations were transformed into Amsterdam fire trucks through removable decals and stickers.

Most businesses along the street closed for the day.

Alas, Crowe and DiCaprio were nowhere in sight, in spite of rumors to the contrary. Most of domestic filming will be done in Baltimore, with the cast heading to Morocco for the international scenes.

The action-packed flick, based on a David Ignatius novel of the same name, is scheduled for release next year.
