| Murky Coffee still closed, owes more than $400,000 in taxes |
VOICE writes, "BY BEN WEINSTEIN
Murky Coffee has remained closed since the city shuttered the popular Capitol Hill establishment on Feb. 26 because it owes more than $400,000 in delinquent tax payments.
Owner Nick Cho posted a message on Murky’s Web site saying he hoped to open earlier this week, but that “it's hard to be too optimistic about any sort of prediction right now.”
“We submitted the requested information on Thursday morning, and our “case” has been sitting on someone's desk at the DC Office of Tax and Revenue since then,” Cho said in the message.
Murky Coffee owes the District $427, 395 in unpaid sales tax dating back to November 2004, according to D.C. Office of Tax and Revenue spokesperson Natalie Wilson."

Wilson said the office attempted to work out a payment plan with Cho to keep the 7th Street store open. There is also a Murky Coffee in Arlington that remains open for business.
“There is no plan as of now,” Wilson said when asked if Cho had presented a payment schedule.
Cho did not return calls for comment in time for publication, but an employee at the Arlington location, who did not want to be identified, said “everything we can do has been done,” adding that Cho submitted the paperwork the city requested.
William Bowie, the tax agency’s general counsel, declined to comment specifically on Murky Coffee’s case, but said that to reopen, a business must prove it has the financial wherewithal to make late payments and current tax payments.
“They have to come to us and present a proposal,” Bowie said.
Again speaking generally, Bowie said that before it closes a business for delinquent payments, the tax office attempts to solve problems through “extensive negotiations with the taxpayer. … If they choose not to meet with us,” he said, the only option is to shutter the business.
